After agriculture, textile is the second largest employment generator in India. However, the industry is decentralized (and hence unable to bear the international competition esp. from Bangladesh and Vietnam).

Positive :

  • it is labour-intensive industry (and India has availability of skilled labour for textiles and that too at low-cost)
  • Demand for textiles is increasing at the domestic as well as global level
  • dominated by women workers (70%). So, development in the textile industry = women empowerment
  • availability of input — cotton, silk, etc.

Negative :

  • stiff competition from other emerging players in textile industry globally
  • capital-intensive and the need of overhauling the old machinery and adopting new technology
  • marketing and brand building
